Fabric Focus: Sheers

Simple and ethereal, sheers have always been a timeless choice for creating calming spaces.

Add a whisper of interest with a gentle sheer. Not just for summer, the versatility of sheer fabrics makes them a contemporary choice year-round.

They may be more pared back than thicker drapery, but the effortless beauty of sheers still makes an impact. Their simple, flowing fabric diffuses sunlight throughout a room, creating a gentle glow of daylight for a relaxing atmosphere. See a handful of our tips below for using sheers to create ethereal spaces, whilst adding a layer of light, heat, and privacy control.

Create a Cosy Space by Pairing with Thicker Drapery

Make sure your sheers work for your space year-round, by doubling up your window dressings.

One of the advantages to the simplicity of sheers is their versatility. They can be paired with heavier drapes, such as blackout curtains in the bedroom, to block out natural light. They also add a much-needed layer of privacy. Consider using a subtle, cross-slub sheer underneath a more conversational curtain in a textured boucle jacquard for example. Coordinate both in similar earthy shades of EcruBirch, or Linen.

To create more of an open-plan space whilst adding a layer of privacy, hang a sheer in an archway to gently break up a room. Choose an intricately woven, semi-sheer design for added insulation and privacy. Thicker textures are ideal for minimising draughts and partially concealing one room from another, whilst still allowing daylight to gently filter through.

Layer Different Textured and Patterned Sheers for Added Interest

Layering sheers is a trend we don’t see disappearing anytime soon, and using multiple designs only adds further intrigue to window spaces.

Using multiple sheers provides several focal points, with each design working together to create interest and cohesion. Printed sheers provide the opportunity to add pattern, so why not choose atmospheric designs and abstract interpretations of natural scenes to bring the outdoors in? Pair with tactile designs such as tufted finishes to add dimension. Finally, add in a subtle stripe featuring hints of metallic for a touch of luxury.

Consider a Sheer Blind for Added Light Control

Creating the same feeling of calm as sheer drapery, blinds present a striking blend of form and function.

Enjoy increased light and heat control thanks to a sheer blind. Consisting of two layers of voile and opaque alternating fabric against one another, they are ideal for controlling the intensity of light entering a room. Plus, with a multitude of different designs and shades to choose from, they subtly blend in with a range of décor schemes.

Let the Outside In and Pair with Natural Materials

Contrast and complement the delicate, ethereal beauty of sheers with natural materials and fibres.

Pair your sheers with textures such as rattan and jute in your accessories. Add in foliage such as strands of pampas grass, indoor greenery, and trailing vines. Match cushions and other soft furnishings with linen-look sheers in complementary, ethereal colourways. Alternatively, choose sheers with diverse texture for added interest.
